The 10 Words You Need to Understand Crypto
Crypto people talk like they’re speaking a different language. They kind of are.
But here’s the secret: the entire field runs on about 10 words. Learn these, and 80% of the conversations suddenly make sense.
The 10 Words
1. Blockchain
A shared digital record book that no single person or company controls. Once something is written in it, nobody can erase it.
You already know this if you read our blockchain explainer.
2. Wallet
An app that holds the keys to your crypto — like a bank account that only you can access. Lose your keys, lose your money. There’s no “forgot password” button.
3. Mining / Validating
The process of computers racing to confirm transactions and add them to the blockchain. The winning computer gets paid in new crypto. This is how new coins enter the system.
4. Gas Fees
A small payment you make to have your transaction processed. Think of it like paying postage on a letter — busier networks charge more, quieter ones charge less.
5. Decentralized (or “DeFi”)
Short for Decentralized Finance. Financial apps that run on a blockchain instead of through a bank. You can lend, borrow, trade, and earn interest without ever talking to a human or filling out paperwork.
6. Stablecoin
A crypto token designed to always be worth $1. It’s the bridge between traditional money and crypto — useful for trading without cashing out to your bank every time.
7. Smart Contract
Code that automatically executes an agreement when conditions are met. “If Dave sends $50, then send him the concert ticket.” No lawyer, no escrow, no waiting. The code handles it.
8. Staking
Locking up your crypto to help run the network. In return, you earn interest — like a certificate of deposit at a bank, but the “bank” is code running on thousands of computers.
9. NFT
A digital certificate of ownership. Like a deed to a house, but for digital items. Most people know them as “expensive JPEGs,” but the technology is about proving you own something digital.
10. Exchange
A website or app where you trade dollars for crypto — or one crypto for another. The crypto version of a stock brokerage. Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance are the big ones.
What You Don’t Need to Know
You’ll hear words like “zk-rollup,” “composability,” “TVL,” and “permissionless protocol.” You don’t need any of them right now. Those are details. The 10 words above are the skeleton. Everything else hangs off them.
