The Small Coins Screamed the Loudest This Month. Bitcoin Still Took Its Biggest Slice in Years.
Here’s a sentence that sounds wrong: the small coins just had a monster month — Solana up 40%, Ethereum up 27% — and yet Bitcoin quietly walked away with a bigger slice of the pie than it’s held in years.
Let me show you what’s actually happening, because this is one of those things that makes crypto feel like nonsense until someone draws the picture.
First, the pie
All the money sitting in every cryptocurrency combined is worth about $2.6 trillion right now. Think of that as one big pie.
Bitcoin — the original digital money you can send to anyone without a bank in the middle — is worth about $1.56 trillion of that pie on its own.
Do the division and you get roughly 60%. Nearly six out of every ten dollars in all of crypto is sitting in Bitcoin.
That number has a name: Bitcoin dominance. It just means “Bitcoin’s slice of the pie.” And right now that slice is the biggest it’s been in years.
The part that feels like a contradiction
Here’s where it gets interesting, because this month the small coins were the loud ones.
Solana — the one I keep saying is the best crypto to actually try — is up about 40% over the last month and finally crossed back above $100. Ethereum is up about 27%. XRP jumped. Zcash jumped. A bunch of the joke coins went vertical.
Bitcoin, by comparison, rose “only” about 21%.
So how is it possible that Bitcoin gained share while growing slower?
Because a percentage is not the same as a size.
The big boat and the small boat
Picture two boats in a harbor. One is a cruise ship. The other is a fishing boat.
The fishing boat’s captain brags that he added 40% more cargo this month. The cruise ship’s captain says he only added 21%.
But the cruise ship was already carrying $1.3 trillion. Adding 21% to a ship that size means piling on about $269 billion more.
The fishing boat, meanwhile, was carrying about $43 billion. Adding 40% to that means about $17 billion more.
So the fishing boat grew faster — and the cruise ship still added about fifteen times more stuff.
That’s exactly what happened in crypto this month. Solana’s 40% gain added roughly $17 billion to the pie. Bitcoin’s 21% gain added roughly $269 billion. Bitcoin’s slice got bigger even as the small coins ran faster, simply because Bitcoin was already so much larger.
Why this matters more than you’d think
You might be thinking: okay, Bitcoin is big. So what?
Here’s the “so what,” and it’s the real reason I’m writing this.
Where the money chooses to sit tells you what kind of market we’re in.
When people feel greedy, they take risks. They pour money into the small, new, “this could 10x” coins. When people feel nervous, they do the opposite: they park their money in the biggest, oldest, most boring option — which in crypto is Bitcoin.
So Bitcoin’s slice of the pie is basically a mood ring for the whole market. High dominance means cautious. Low dominance means “let’s gamble.”
And right now, dominance is near a multi-year high. That’s the part worth sitting with.
The honest part (because I don’t do hype)
Let me not oversell this. High Bitcoin dominance isn’t “good news” or “bad news.” It’s just a signal. And that signal has two honest sides.
The reassuring side: Even in the middle of a wild rally, the money is behaving like it’s still a little scared. That’s actually healthier than the mania of 2021, when people threw money at coins named after dogs and cartoons. This market is front-running with the safe, boring money.
The cautionary side: A market crowded into one asset is a market holding its breath. The last two weeks were a huge rally powered by a quiet money switch — the government making money easier to get, which I’ve explained lifts every boat. Today the whole market dipped about 5% as that tide paused. When the “safe” money is concentrated in one place, a wobble there shakes everything.
Neither of those is a prediction. I don’t do predictions. But understanding the pie is how you stop being surprised by the news.
What This Means For You
Three things worth taking away:
“Up a lot” and “up the most” are different. Solana’s 40% month sounds bigger than Bitcoin’s 21%. It is — in percentage. In actual dollars added, Bitcoin won by a mile. When someone tells you a coin “went up 500%,” ask what it started from. A $10 million coin going to $60 million is a rounding error in a $2.6 trillion market.
Bitcoin is the blue chip. If you’re ever going to understand crypto, start with this: Bitcoin is to crypto what the biggest, safest company is to the stock market. Everything else is a bet on a specific idea — Ethereum on apps, Solana on speed. Bitcoin is the bet on “crypto as a whole exists and is worth something.” That’s why it’s the default parking spot.
Watch the slice, not just the price. The next time you see a headline that says “small coins are taking over,” glance at Bitcoin’s dominance. If it’s still near 60%, the small coins are just making noise on the surface — the big money hasn’t actually moved. When you see dominance fall, that’s when the “let’s gamble” phase is really starting.
This whole month has felt like a blur — Bitcoin breaking $80,000, then giving it back, gold hitting a record, and today’s dip. Underneath all of it, the money has been quietly doing the sensible thing: staying mostly in the boring, big, safe boat.
That’s not a boring fact. It’s the most useful one of the month.
