Crypto Just Had Its Best Week in a Year. Here’s the Score Nobody’s Posting.

All week I’ve been showing you this rally piece by piece — Bitcoin breaking $70,000, the government’s quiet money switch, the smaller coins going nuts. And I’ve been careful to say this is a recovery, not a new record.

Today I want to show you the actual score. Because there’s one number nobody is posting — not the people shouting “to the moon,” not the people shouting “it’s a trap” — and it’s the one that tells you where crypto actually stands.

The Week, in One Glance

In seven days, the biggest names in crypto all jumped at once:

CoinPrice nowUp this week
Bitcoin$77,500+22%
Ethereum$2,462+29%
Solana$95+24%
XRP$1.48+48%

The whole crypto market added roughly $400 billion in about two weeks — from about $2.27 trillion to $2.62 trillion. That’s a genuinely big deal. It’s the kind of week that makes people say “crypto is back.”

It is back. Sort of. Here’s the part that gets left out.

The Simple Version

Imagine you drop your phone off a ten-story building. Then you climb down, pick it up, and walk back up three flights of stairs.

The phone is still six floors below where it started. Walking up three flights is real progress — you’re moving in the right direction, faster than you have in a year. But if someone saw you on the stairs and shouted “he’s back on the roof!” — they’d be lying.

That’s the gap between this week’s headlines and the actual score.

The Number Nobody’s Posting

Here it is. For every major coin, two numbers side by side: how far it fell from its peak, and how much it would have to climb from here just to get back to even.

CoinDown from its peakWhat it needs to get back to even
Bitcoin-38%+63%
Ethereum-50%+100% (double)
XRP-59%+146%
Solana-68%+209% (more than triple)

Read that right-hand column slowly, because it’s the whole point.

Bitcoin had its best week in a year — up 22% — and it’s still 38% below its record of about $126,000 from last October. To get back to that record, it has to climb another 63% from here. This week’s monster rally didn’t even close half the gap.

And Bitcoin is the healthy one. Solana is down 68% from its peak. To get back to even, it has to more than triple. Ethereum has to double. XRP has to go up another 146%.

Why “Down 50%” Is Worse Than It Sounds

There’s a rule here worth memorizing, because it applies to stocks, houses, and crypto alike: losses are steeper than they look, because the climb back is bigger than the fall.

If something falls 50%, it has to rise 100% to get back to where it started. A $100 investment that drops to $50 needs to double just to be $100 again.

That’s not a crypto thing. It’s just how percentages work. But it’s the math almost no one does when they read “Bitcoin is up 22% this week!”

Here’s the version for crypto: every major coin is down somewhere between 38% and 68% from its peak. That means every one of them needs to rise somewhere between 63% and 209% just to get back to where it was last October. This week was the first real step — but it wasn’t the finish line. It was the first three flights of stairs.

So Why Did Everyone Get So Excited?

Because the direction finally changed.

For a year, crypto was sliding. Bitcoin fell from $126,000 to around $62,000 — roughly half its value gone. Every bounce fizzled. Hope leaked out. Then, two weeks ago, something changed — not in the technology, but in the money.

The US government quietly turned on a “money hose” — buying back its own IOUs (bonds) ahead of schedule, which pumps cash into the financial system. Some of that cash went looking for a riskier home, and crypto caught the spray. The quiet money switch explains the whole mechanism, and Easy Money explains why this matters more than any tech news.

The point for today: the rally is real, and the reason is real money — not vibes. But that same reason also tells you the risk. The switch that turned the tide in can turn it out.

The Honest Other Side

Our job is the full truth, so let me say the good and the bad in one breath.

This is genuinely good news. A year of falling prices just turned around. The money driving it is real — a government operation, not a rumor. The rules for crypto are getting clearer. This is the healthiest the market has looked in a year, and that’s worth saying without caveats.

And it’s still a long climb. Every major coin is down between 38% and 68% from its peak. “Best week in a year” is not the same as “recovered.” Anyone telling you crypto is “back to normal” is skipping the math. Anyone telling you the rally is fake is skipping the fact that the money is real.

Both of those are moods. The math is the only part that isn’t up for debate.

What This Means For You

Three takeaways, whether or not you own a single coin:

  1. Do the recovery math on anything you own — or anything you’re tempted to buy. “Down 50%” sounds like a normal dip. “Needs to double to get back to even” sounds a lot scarier, and it’s the same thing. This one habit — asking “what would it need to do to get back to even?” — will save you from buying things that already ran and expecting them to keep running.

  2. “Best week in a year” and “recovered” are different sentences. This week was genuinely great. It was also the first step of a climb that’s mostly still ahead. Hold both ideas at once and you’ll be harder to fool — by the cheerleaders and the doomers.

  3. Watch the money, not the headlines. The rally happened because the government turned on a money hose. The next big question isn’t “did Bitcoin get better?” — it’s “does the money keep flowing?” If it does, the climb continues. If the government reverses course, the tide goes back out, and this week’s gains can go with it. That’s not pessimism; it’s how the tide works. Start here to understand it.

The bigger lesson, the one I keep coming back to: crypto prices are mostly a story about money, and the score that matters isn’t “how much did it go up this week” — it’s “how far is it from where it was, and what would it take to get back.” This week was three flights of stairs in the right direction. Keep climbing — but don’t mistake the stairs for the roof.
